American Cockroaches

The American cockroach is the largest roach species of household pest. These critters can be found lurking in cafes, grocery stores, restaurants, and other places where food is prepared or stored. Dark, damp spaces like sewers, basements, and heating ducts are popular hideouts. Beware of bringing these pests into your home through deliveries or packaging from infested locations.

These creatures are generally 1.4 to 1.6 inches long, but some can even reach over 2 inches in length. You can identify them by their reddish-brown colour and the distinctive yellow band behind their head. In addition, these insects have wings that allow them to fly short distances.

Male cockroaches have shorter wings than females. Their wings only extend a little past the tip of their abdomen, while female wings match the length of their abdomen. Meanwhile, baby cockroaches, or nymphs, resemble adults but are smaller and lack wings.

American cockroach’s lifecycle comprises three distinct developmental stages – egg, nymph, and adult. The eggs are enclosed in dark brown capsules that are 8mm long, and the female cockroach deposits the capsule within the first 24 hours of forming it.

Female American roaches select a safe location to deposit their egg capsule, which contains 14-16 eggs on average. These capsules are usually produced at a frequency of one per week and are securely attached to a concealed surface. One female roach can produce anywhere from 15 to 90 egg capsules.

It can take between 29 and 58 days for cockroach eggs to hatch. Once they do, it takes 50 to 55 days for the nymphs to hatch at room temperature. The young cockroaches start as greyish brown and later turn reddish brown after their first few moults.

Dangers to Humans

These pesky insects love feeding on various items, including cheese, bakery goods, leather, hair, plant materials and glue. These creatures breed in moist environments. So, you’ll often find them lurking in damp places like bathrooms, sewers, and garbage dumps.

American roaches can transfer grime, bacteria, and other nastiness to your food, kitchen surfaces, cutlery, and more. These germs and contamination can lead to severe illnesses like food poisoning, dysentery, and diarrhea.

Moreover, these critters’ droppings and shed skin can contain allergens that may cause allergies. And if their infestation is left unchecked, they can emit a pungent odour in your home. So keep your home pleasant and healthy by taking proactive measures to prevent and eliminate their presence.
